Macquarie University holds two main HDR scholarship rounds offering University and Commonwealth Government funded scholarships. One round is for domestic candidates and one round for international candidates.

2018 International Research Training Program scholarship (IRTP) and International Macquarie University Research Training Program scholarship (IMQRTP)
The main scholarship round for international candidates is the International Research Training Program scholarship (IRTP). The International Research Training Program is the Australian Commonwealth Government scholarship scheme for supporting international higher degree research candidates of exceptional promise. Applicants applying for an IRTP will be automatically considered for the University funded International Macquarie University Research Training Program scholarship (IMQRTP) in the same round. No allocation reference numbers apply. Applicants should refer to main round scholarships as 'IRTP/IMQRTP' on their application.

Successful IRTP candidates will receive:
- Tuition fee offset for 3 years maximum
- Stipend (tax exempt, indexed annually stipend, 2017 rate $26,682 pa)
- Single standard Overseas Student Health Cover
- Travel Concession (local transport OPAL Card)
Successful IMQRTP candidates will receive
- Tuition fee offset for 3 years maximum
- Stipend (tax exempt, indexed annually stipend, 2017 rate $26,682 pa)
Macquarie also offers a limited number of scholarships to international Master of Research candidates (MRes) candidates applying for an MRes/PhD ‘bundle’ (i.e. MRes Year 2 and 3-year PhD) through this competitive IRTP round. Successful candidates will be awarded a provisional PhD offer, and they will be considered for a 3 year PhD scholarship on a competitive basis upon successful completion of MRes Year 2.
Eligibility:
- International candidates commencing their PhD or MPhil program in 2018
- Applicants must meet Macquarie University academic admission requirements, including the minimum English language requirements
- Candidates are expected to undertake full time, internal, on-site candidature at Macquarie University
- Candidates will be rated against the criteria outlined on the MQ HDR scholarship rating sheet, and in accordance with the MQ Research Training Program Scholarship Guidelines

Application process for NEW applicants who have not previously applied to MQ:
- MUST submit an application for scholarship and candidature via the e-Application portal on the How to Apply section and include transcripts, degrees/testamurs, English language proficiency evidence, research proposal and other relevant documentation
- MUST indicate IRTP/IMQRTP in the scholarship question
- Applicants must request their referees to send referee reports directly to hdrschol@mq.edu.au
Application process for OTHER applicants (current MQ HDR candidates, and applicants with a successful candidature offer less than 12 months old):
While current candidates are eligible to apply, any consumed prior enrolment will be counted as advanced standing and will reduce the maximum scholarship duration offered.
- MUST submit an application form with supporting documents to hdrschol@mq.edu.au with approval to defer their candidature commencement to Session 1 2018
- Include any additional documentation/research output
- MUST indicate IRTP/IMQRTP under the scholarship details question
- MUST include ID number and full name in email subject line (in one PDF attachment)
Closes: 31 July 2017 for scholarships commencing in semester 1, 2018.
Applicants shall be advised of the outcome of the applications from mid-October 2017 onwards.
