The API Fellowship Program is designed to stimulate the creation of anew
pool of such intellectuals in the region. They aim to promote mutual
learning among Asian public intellectuals and to contribute to the growth
of public spaces in which effective responses to regional needs can be
generated.
Themes
Changing Identities and their Social, Historical, and Cultural
Contexts e.g. the use of historical memory in building regional and
national identities; the construction of cultural majorities and
minorities; the role of the media and the arts; the dynamics of cultural
encounter; the performance of gender, religious, and class roles.
Reflection on the Human Condition and the Search for Social Justice e.g.
the distribution of political rights; economic and physical security; the
management of social change; the marginalization of peripheral
populations; human interaction with the environment.
Current Structure of Globalization and Possible Alternatives e.g.the
impact of economic integration on states and societies; human and capital
migration; the changing role of borders; the meaning of self-reliance;
the global marketing of culture; civil society in the era of
globalization.
API Senior and API Fellowships Eligibility
The API Fellowship Program is
open to academics, researchers, media professionals, artists, creative
writers, NGO activists, social workers, public servants and others with
moral authority -- who are committed to work for the betterment of
society by applying their professional knowledge,wisdom, and experience.
It will give these public leaders the opportunity to learn what their
counterparts are doing in different cultural and ethnic contexts,
generate theoretical ideas to cope with social and economic changes, and
build the intellectual networks of the future. Along one of the themes,
the Fellows will be required to:
o Propose and carry out research projects and/or professional activities in a participating country or
countries other than their native country and/or country of residence;
o Conduct research projects and/or professional activities in compliance
with the schedule accepted by the International Selection Committee;
o Attend the API Workshop to exchange results of their research projects
and/or professional activities with other Fellows;
o Disseminate their
findings and results to a wider audience; and
o Pursue a deeper knowledge of each other, and hence of the region.
Various programs will be sponsored to provide the Fellows the opportunity
to interact during and after their fellowship period.Participatio n to
the Annual API Workshop at the end of the Fellowship year is obligatory.
The Workshop's primary aim is to facilitate the exchange of ideas to
establish a cohesive network of public intellectuals spanning multiple
generations, countries, and specialties as well as exchange of
information and results of research projects and/or professional
activities among the Fellows.
The API Senior Fellowships target public intellectuals with excellent
records and experience in their field of expertise, and are active in
professional fields such as academia, social work,journalism, business,
public administration, creative arts and those working in
non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and foundations. TheAPI Senior
Fellows are expected to be especially active in nurturing creative
intellectual exchange beyond their own country, specialty,
and generation. The applicants must: * Be 40 years of age or more as of
the end of the application period (exceptions may be made);
* Have the ability and experience to conduct research projects
and/or professional activities in the participating countries other
than his/her native country or country of residence;
* Undertake the proposed research projects and/or
professional activities in up to four of the participating countries, but
in a country/ies other than in the applicant's native country or country
of residence;
* Undertake the proposed research projects and/or professional
activities for a continuous period of between one to 12 months; and
* Have the ability, influence, and means to disseminate the results
of their research projects and/or professional activities.
The API Fellowships enable promising young intellectuals to broaden their
expertise and develop regional linkages at a formative time intheir
careers. The applicants must: * Be under the age of 40 as of the
deadline of application period (exceptions may be made);
* Have the ability and desire to engage in research projects
and/or professional activities in the participating countries other
than his/her native or country of residence;
* Have a strong potential to contribute to their field in the future;
* Undertake the proposed research projects and/or
professional activities for a consecutive period of between four to 12
months; and
* Undertake the proposed research projects and/or
professional activities in up to two of the participating countries, but
in a country/ies other than the applicant's native country or country
of residence.
All applicants must: * Hold the nationality or proper residence status
of one of the five participating countries and reside in the country at
the time of the application;
* Attend the interview at the designated date and place;
* Propose research projects and/or professional activities which start
after 1 July and should be completed by 30 September of the following
year;
* Have a basic knowledge of English or a language/s spoken in
the country/ies where the proposed research project and/or
professional activities are conducted; and
* Be based in the region/country and will continue to be so in the
future.
Benefits include stipend, housing, one round trip
international transportation, domestic transportation allowance, research
allowance(to cover expenses such as computers, field research,
translation, research materials), and books, and travel insurance during
the fellowship period.
Selection Procedure will first be through the Country Selection Committee
composed of notable public intellectuals of the country andthen by the
International Selection Committee consisting of representatives of the
Partner Institutions as well as eminent public intellectuals of the
region. Four to six Fellows will be chosen from each country.
Application Documents must be typed; hand-written documents will NOT be

should not exceed five pages, single-spaced; and may be inE nglish or in
the applicant's national language. If not written in English, attach a
summary in English as well as in the language/s in the country/ies that
the applicant proposes to stay. Fellowship will NOT be provided if
undertaken in the native country or country of residence. The project
statement must include: * How is the proposed research project and/or
professional activity related or relevant to one of the API Fellowship
Program's three broad themes?
* What are the background, significance, objective/s, and
rationale for the proposed research project and/or professional activity?
State if the proposed project is related to any of your
previous involvements; other sources of funds and grant coverage and
benefits.
* Elaborate on your existing knowledge and/or information about
your topic vis-?-vis the country/ies where you propose to conduct
your research project or professional activity. This will help the
Selection Committee to assess the viability and justification of the
country/ies proposed.
* What are the methodology, work plan, and time schedule of the
proposed research project and/or professional activity?
* Do you have the institutional contact/s, if any, that you may have
in the proposed host countries? If so, who are they?
* What are the main anticipated outputs and when will it be
completed? How can these contribute to your future involvements?
* What is your plan for disseminating or implementing the results of
the research project and/or professional activity?

Two Written Reference Letters addressed to the API Fellowship
Program include vital information and reference to the referee's
relationship to the applicant, the experience of the applicant in the
proposed project area and the ability of the applicant to complete the
project.These may be written either in English or in the national
language of the applicant and written within three months before the
deadline of the submission.
Curriculum Vitae should not exceed three pages in length, must beboth in
English and in the national language of the applicant, and should refer
to relevant and recent activities in the educational and employment
history of the applicant. Publications, awards, grants received and
public and civil society involvement should be included,if any. Artists
and media workers may be asked to submit sample work.
Please note that any misrepresentations, willful or otherwise, madein
any of the documents above may be cause for revocation of the Fellowship
Grant at any time.
